The Maloof Money Cup will return to Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province for its second edition from 28 – 30 September 2012.  Considered to be the world’s premier showcase for professional and amateur skateboarding, the Maloof Money Cup SA world skateboarding championships is also tagged as the richest event of its kind with a prize purse of over 500,000 US dollars.

The three-day event will be hosted at the Kimberley Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberly and will feature some of the top skateboarders from around the world on the magnificent street and vert sections of the world class state-of-the-art course.  Top professional contenders as well as South African amateurs will battle it out for the word champion titles in the various disciplines.

According to Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof Skateboarding and owner of The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, they are delighted to return to South Africa.  “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the positive reaction from the South African public during the first event in 2011.  The government and people of the Northern Cape Province embraced the concept and we were amazed by the incredible hospitality.  We were especially proud of the reception we received from the local skateboarding community and the wonderful natural talent and enthusiasm expressed by skateboarders across the country.  This year’s world championships, the biggest skateboarding contest in the world, promises to be bigger and better than ever and we can’t wait to return to sunny South Africa,” mentioned Joe Maloof.

The 2011 Maloof Money Cup was the first time that the event left American shores and proved to be the biggest sporting event ever to be hosted in the Northern Cape.  The capital of Kimberley was literally invaded as thousands of spectators and skateboarding enthusiasts descended on the town for the contest.  The event made a significant economic impact on the regional economy as accommodation facilities, restaurants and tourism attractions were filled to capacity.

Following the unprecedented success of the inaugural event, Maloof Skateboarding this week announced that they have extended their contract with the Northern Cape as hosts of this exhilarating event to five years.  This will arguably transform Kimberley into the skateboarding capital of the world as professional skateboarders have proclaimed the state-of-the-art skate plaza as the best of its kind in the world.

Hosting the Maloof Money Cup formed a crucial part in the repositioning of the Northern Cape Province as the prime destination for adventure and extreme sports in the country, but also gave the provincial government the opportunity to engage with the youth of the province.  “The 2011 Maloof Money Cup was undoubtedly a huge success in terms of global media exposure and economic benefit to the province, but the impact we had on the youth of our province was unbelievable.  The Maloof Money Cup presented to them a lifestyle alternative that is accessible and affordable and could be the catalyst for huge socio-economic changes,” stated John Block, Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.

During the run-up to the event, the provincial government will continue to take the message of skateboarding to the streets with the Skateboarding for Hope community outreach programme .  In addition, skateboarding road tours and public qualifier events will be hosted across the country to identify budding skateboarding talent.  Three Pro Tours will feature some of the top riders in the world and will help in creating awareness of skateboarding as one of the fastest growing sports in the world amongst local communities.

Over the past years the NSA Buck Comp has grown from a well attended Event to a big Annual Tour. We have seen a continued growth with our number of competitors each year and even bigger growth in the crowds’ that we pull to our event.

This is one event that is all about the skater.

Every year the event gets SA’s top Skaters coming through to Compete as well as not wanting to miss the infamous parties that goes with the Event – Def a must attend

FMX :

The day started off with the first of three FMX shows which saw Matt King and Wayne Lester (on a 4-wheeler) get the crowds warmed up. They were hitting the smaller gap of 16 meters but didn’t disappoint, especially with Wayne throwing huge Cans and Cordovas which just look insane on a 4 wheeler. Then the big guns came out; Nick De Wit and Alastair Sayer hitting a gap of 22 meters. Obviously the crowds went off as they pulled perfect Cliff-hangers, Rock Solids, 9 o’clock Nacs and crazy combos. Nick and Ali then interacted with the crowd on top of the landing, making sure the crowd was making as much noise as possible before they brought out their back-flips and back-flip combos. The crowd went off – definitely a goose bump moment.

BMX :

These guys threw down all day long – watching the preliminary rounds was like watching a final. Greg Illingworth stood out with his huge transfers while Malcolm Peters and David Rigby landed big, technical tricks over the box and spine jumps. Colin Loudon was also a contender but had a few crashes and also hurt his recently healed hand. Wayne Reiche had the crowd screaming for him as he spent his whole day and runs trying to land on the top of the wall ride, he finally landed it at the end of the comp and Ultimate X erupted in applause, screams and whistles! It was good to see BMX legend Francois April take part in the comp as well.

Jason Hood took the win in the rail jam comp with a backwards grind down the ledge.

Wake:

In the heat of the Cape Town sun, this event was welcomed by spectators who swamped the edges of the canal with their feet in the water to watch the wake-boarders in action. Each rider had four passes in the canal hitting the rail three times and then hitting the kicker on their last pass. Gregor Reithmuth was technical on the rail with some 270’s on to 270’s off. Devon Nassif did some impressive presses, in his words “press to impress and not spin to win”, he also mixed it up by placing a plastic box on the end of the rail and olleying over it. It was a blast watching this event and it just looked so cool with the backdrop of the mountain in the background.

Skate :

The consensus around the park was that the level of skating was really pushed up from last year. Louis Taubert, a skater from Germany out here for a while entered the comp and his runs were flowing and consistent. Simon Stipcich had a good run and was landing tricks like his 360 flip down the rail. Dlamini Dlamini landed a switch lip-slid down the rail and Moses Adams looked dialed.

The street course where the contest will be hosted pays tribute to Kimberley’s heritage, incorporating the famous Kimberley diamond into the course design. Designed by Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks and Pro Skater and Vans Team Rider Geoff Rowley, the features for the course are based on skate spots from around the world.

The Maloof Money Cup World Vert Championships will take place on a custom-designed vert ramp with a mini megaramp designed for high flying action. The world’s best vert skaters, including Alex Perelson, Bob Burnquist, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Sandro Dias, Elliot Sloan, Andy MacDonald and Adam Taylor will compete on Sunday for the first-ever world championship vert title and a top cash prize of $75,000.

Both the new skate park and the vert ramp will be left permanently for the community.

“This is going to be a contest like we’ve never seen before,” said Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. “The best street and vert skaters from around the world competing for a world championship title, that’s something that has never been done before. The street course and vert ramp we’re building for this event are absolutely amazing and we are leaving everything behind for the community. This will make our second skate park left for communities this year and our third permanent park in two years. South Africa is a little different because there are so many children across the country who need help. We think skateboarding offers these kids an affordable, positive activity, and one that may provide career opportunities. The goal is that the kids in the community are inspired to take up skateboarding and that Kimberley becomes a world-class destination for skateboarders.”

 

The weather was a concern initially but held out nicely all day and the crowds came through in there numbers to support
The day Started off with the Top MTB riders with former Down-Hill rider Justin Novella taking the title and closely followed by Ryan Franklin.
Then straight into the Pro’s taking on the different section and lines and battling it out with the crowds going crazy!
The format was a head on head format with the top 14 guys being cut down to 6 in the 2nd round and then to the Top 3 in the Finals with Mr Stuart Louden Taking the WIN !!

Guys went off, with 3′s , whips, flips & combo’s … after the judges calculated there scores we heading into the best trick with guys like David Rigby , Malcolm Peters. Greg Illingworth ,Wayne Reiche showing what they have to offer ,
Malcolm and David ended up sharing the Contest with David doing the cleaning Flip Whip over the Big Jump and Malcolm killing a HUGE 3 Double whip for the 1st time at Gums.

The Red Bull / DC Quarter Jam didn’t disappoint as per usual wit the crowds surrounding the massive dirt Quarter with the new 2.5m Wall Ride,
Greg Illingworth won the quarter pipe best trick with a peg stall on top of the wallride, then transfer over to other side. And a special mention goes out to Wayne Reiche who was hitting the wallride hard, and Malcolm Peters who pulled a wallride tailwhip off the top. But Greg’s transfer was the standout from a pure gnarly factor.
